A significant chunk of what an administrator does, you can do yourself for free.

If you are a US-based artist whose listeners are overwhelmingly American, you can:

• Join BMI or ASCAP — free — and collect US performance royalties
• Register with the MLC — free, no commission — and collect US streaming mechanicals
• Register with SoundExchange — free — and collect digital radio on your masters

That covers the large majority of income for an artist whose audience is domestic. Paying 15–20% for a service to do what you can do at no cost is a bad trade.

When it starts making sense

An administrator earns its commission when the admin burden genuinely exceeds what you can handle:

You have meaningful international listenership. This is the real one. If your Spotify for Artists shows serious streams in Germany, Brazil, Japan or the UK, there is foreign performance and mechanical income you are almost certainly not collecting. Registering individually with GEMA, PRS, JASRAC and a dozen others is not realistic for one person.

Your catalogue has outgrown manual registration. Fifty-plus works across multiple territories is a genuine admin job.

You are getting sync placements abroad. Foreign broadcast performance royalties are a real stream and are easy to miss.

You want YouTube Content ID handled. Getting compositions into Content ID properly is fiddly.

Your time is worth more than the commission. A legitimate reason if you are touring and creating at volume.

When to wait

• Your listeners are 90% domestic
• You have a handful of releases
• You have not yet completed the free registrations

That last one is the important one. Do not pay a commission to fix a problem you have not tried to solve for free. Close the free gaps first, look at where your listeners actually are, then decide.

What an administrator does not do

• It does not replace your distributor. Streaming income on your recording still comes through your distributor.
• It does not actively pitch your songs. That is what a traditional publisher with a creative team does. An administrator collects; it does not hustle.
• It does not fix bad metadata. If your splits are unsigned and your ISRCs are wrong, an administrator inherits the mess.

That last one is worth sitting with. Publishing administration is a collection layer on top of your registrations. It amplifies good data and it amplifies bad data. If your co-writer splits were never settled in writing, handing everything to an administrator does not resolve the conflict — it just adds a party.

The bottom line

But it is a tool with a specific job, and the honest advice is sequencing. Do the free registrations first. Check where your listeners actually are. If there is meaningful money outside the US that you are not collecting, an administrator's commission is a good trade. If there is not, it is a fee for work you could do yourself in an afternoon.
